The Paleo Diet

‘Paleo’ is slowly becoming a word people recognize but it still is fairly new to us all even though it is based off information over 2 million years ago.

I first heard of the term September 2011 but didn't adopt the lifestyle until March 2012. I have had such amazing results in weight loss and overall health that I have incorporated it into my business.

What is Paleo?

Simply put, paleo means eating how the cavemen ate millions of years ago.To further explain however…

The paleo diet is not just a diet that you follow to achieve a specific goal, but more a way of living in harmony with nature and our food to achieve optimal health. It is first and foremost about health, however weight loss tends to naturally follow.

“My digestive issues have all resolved and I’m leaner than I have ever been. I feel great!”

It is called a paleo diet because it includes the food that was available to us for most of our evolution during the paleolithic era, starting about 2.5 million years ago. The idea is that our genes and physiology evolved through the process of natural selection and are most adapted to be nourished with the food that we evolved around. That includes beef, fish, shellfish, poultry, pork, lamb, bison etc. Including their fat and organs as well as eggs, vegetables and small amounts of fruits and nuts, as those were only found seasonally.

On the opposite side, some of the foods that we started eating in large quantities since the beginning of the agricultural revolution, about 10,000 years ago, are completely alien to our genes and metabolisms and wreak havoc in our body. This often causes what we call the metabolic syndrome or diseases of civilization. This includes obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, auto-immune diseases, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s and the list goes on. These were unknown to our ancestors yet greatly plague us today.

Some of the worst offenders in today’s diet are what’s actually recommended by governments and nutritionists because bad science and economic agendas have demonized things like saturated fat, cholesterol and red meat over the last decades. What we should really be eliminating in our diet are grain products, excess sugar, vegetable seed oils, legumes and dairy, some of which are at the core of the U.S. food pyramid.

The paleo diet and lifestyle is not just based on imitating what our ancestors did, but also on real non-biased science and evidence. The habits of our healthy ancestors give us a good framework to study deeper and to try and find what our food really does to our bodies and how to live the longest and most vibrant lives.

What can I eat?

“I am thrilled with the results - I am down 20 lbs and a couple of sizes too”

Many people become intimidated when they think about eliminating wheat and sugar from their diet. I often hear ‘what do you eat then?’ or ‘how can you give up sugar?’

The first question makes me laugh because there is a ton I CAN eat. This way of eating is far less about deprivation than a mainstream diet is. I am not counting calories or watching my portion sizes, I am simply eliminating the toxic food products from my diet.

The first thing to think about is about what you CAN eat, not what you CAN’T. Start small and work your way up from there.

The first step is to eliminate wheat/gluten. Do that for 30 days and I guarantee you, you will feel better. You may be thinking ‘but I am not intolerant to gluten’ and I am telling you that we ALL are intolerant to gluten, some just experience it more severely.

Mark Sisson, founder of the ’Primal Blueprint’, addresses this well on his post from Mark’s Daily Apple:

“You may not have an obvious problem now, but that’s only because you’ve grown accustomed to your body and it to your diet. The signals of discomfort are dulled, and the intensity of the pain has reduced. You’ve gotten used to the stomach upset, the intermittent bouts of diarrhea. You know how all those ‘things just happen’ as you get older, a view that is reinforced when you see the same thing happening to everyone else around you (all of whom also happen to eat grains)?”

Keep in mind gluten intolerance shows up in many ways besides stomach upset. Headaches, eczema, joint pain/arthritis, bruising or simply fatigue to name a few.
